Simple and Magical Pingshuai - Detoxifying Qigong

Part 1

The Miracles of Pingshuai Qigong

Yao, Weihua 饒維華

In 1997, 72-year-old Mr. Weihua Yao lost twelve lbs of body weight in a few days, suffering acute pain in his lower back and thighs. He lost another eighteen lbs during the following two weeks, and his body began to give off an offensive smell. A physical examination showed that he had prostate cancer, which had by then spread to his bone marrow, making his illness inoperable. The doctor declared that he had two months to live.

Mr. Yao stayed in the hospital for one week. The pain was so great that he couldn’t keep his back straight, much less sit up in bed. After-qi-regulating session by Lee Feng-San Shifu to lessen his pain, Mr. Yao got out of bed and started a daily Detoxing Qigong routine of five thousand repetitions. He has never stopped since.

With amazing resolve, Mr. Yao created a miracle. His cancer began to cure within three months. His antigen level returned to normal.

He also switched to a vegetarian diet, took ganaderma powder and bee pollen, and drank one and a half quarts of carrot and apple juice everyday. During these three months, Mr. Yao showed clear signs of detoxification. The back of his hands turned black. He had two bowel movements everyday. His body smelled so bad that he needed to shower twice daily. Gradually but unmistakably, Mr. Yao regained his strength and weight, and the reek of his body disappeared.

In 2000, four years after the doctor had pronounced that he had only two months to live, Mr. Yao travelled to Beijing with Lee Feng-San Shifu and many other students of the Meimen Qigong Culture Center. He walked in front of everybody and led the pack in reaching the highest point of the Great Wall. Mr. Yao owes his miraculous recovery to Pingshuai and has a few words of advice for everyone, “The sooner you start Pingshuai, the better.”

Lan, Jingfeng 藍景渢

Mrs. Jingfeng Lan was a medical professional and worked for many years in ICU, where

she had seen and handled all imaginable emergencies and had in the process learned to accomplish her work with poise. None of what she learned in her profession, however, prepared her for what would happen with the birth of her second daughter, Yunchung. Since birth, Yunchung was a regular visitor to the doctor’s. Her illnesses developed from bronchitis to pneumonia to asthma. Doctors ended up prescribing the maximum dosage of steroid but her conditions only got worse. Disappointed with western medicine, Mrs. Lan turned to Chinese medicine for help, but still the result was far less than satisfactory.

One day, Mrs. Lan read a book written by Lee Feng-San Shifu. She decided immediately to take her two daughter to Meimen to learn qigong. The oldest daughter, who was prone to catch colds, began to develop stronger resistance against colds, and was able to recover without taking medication. But the most prominent result was to be seen with Yunchung. Her monthly visit to the doctor’s dwindled to once every six months. And when she had an asthma attack, she was able to overcome it without the use of any medicine.

Needless to say, Mrs. Lan was greatly heartened by the improvement of her children’s physical condition. She started to practice qigong herself. Her health, mental and physical, improved and she lost 24 pounds in the process! She is also happy to find out that her girls have not only become more healthy, but have also changed from difficult children into well-behaved and considerate little angels.

Mrs. Lan is now a full-time volunteer at Meimen. A Helpless mother before and a worriless mother today, Mrs. Lan’s biggest wish now is for all mothers of the world to never have to worry about their children being sick anymore.

Liao, Yungfeng 廖永豐

In 2002, Mr. Liao received the Golden Heart Award for Excellent Teachers with Physical Disabilities. When Mr. Liao went on stage to receive the honor, his mother, sitting in the audience, shed tears of joy at her son’s glory.

Mr. Liao got polio when he was two years old. His mother carried him on her back and travelled all over Taiwan searching for doctors who could cure her son. Her efforts were in vain. Mr. Liao grew up a quiet child who lied to be left alone and stayed at

home all day. At the age of twenty-four, he met Lee Feng-San Shifu. The encounter

changed his life for good. Lee Shifu told him that he needed a centre for his life, and qigong would be that centre. He started to practice qigong whenever he had time, often up to four or five hours a day. Several years later, at the encouragement of Lee Shifu, he had a surgery to remove the metal piece put in his ankle when he first got polio. One could easily imagine the doubts and worries of the doctor who was asked to perform the procedure. But Mr. Liao, with the help of qigong, never showed any post-surgery symptoms that the doctor worried about. His ankle grew stronger and more flexible, to the point where he was able to go on long-distance mountain hiking trips.

Under the teaching and guidance of Lee Shifu, Mr. Liao changed from a shy and quiet person to a man with a warm and open heart. The transformation was nothing short of a miracle in the eyes of all who knew him. In 2003, he quit his job and became a full-time volunteer at Meimen so that he could help spread Lee Shifu’s teachings to a wider world. “Now I know what it means to live a meaningful life.” He says.

Part 2

What is Pingshuai and how can I practice it effectively?

Dao → Daoyin → Daoyinshu

The root of qigong is the Tao, the dynamic universal prime mover in Chinese philosophy. In order to follow theTao, ancient Chinese people derived a set of primordial laws from Nature, which is considered the full manifestation of the Tao. These laws not only describe a knowledge of Nature, but also prescribe a set of physical

Exercises for people to practice. These exercises are called daoyin (guiding and leading), or daoyinshu (methods of guiding and leading). Daoyin  is not a mere concept. It is the actual practice of a system of knowledge. It is action, an instinct shared by all human beings.

In oriental philosophy, daoyin is the most ancient form of education. Ancient Chinese culture originated from food gathering. To put it in another way, the earliest Chinese education was about acquiring food. In an age when there were yet no teachers, everyone was educated by Nature itself. What was this education about? It was about “hunger”. When people get hungry, they start thinking about ways to get food. In the dawn of human history, the skills of food acquisition grew and developed to cover all areas of daily lives. Eventually, they crystallized into a system of “guiding and leading.” Continual practice of this system further refined it to form daoyinshu, or qigong as we know it today.

Daoyinshu contains valuable principles and exercises of physical and mental health. Another name of daoyinshu is yangshengshu (methods of nourishing the vital principle). The mission of Prusha Tai chi is to start teaching from these basic concepts and exercises of health, then move on to a higher level of “strengthening the body,” and finally to the level of “defending our body,” both internally (body/mind health) and externally (martial arts).

Our age is one that yearns for world peace. We all wish for true equality among all people on earth. A peaceful world, however, is only to be built by people with peaceful minds, and a peaceful mind is the result of a healthy body. Only such people can match their actions with their ideals. Qigong contains concepts and methods to help people attain long-term health of the mind and the body. By devoting ourselves to the teaching of qigong, we are already one step closer to a better world.

Human history shows that in almost every decade there is a large-scale crisis of some kind. Many among us live their lives without much consciousness of the regularity of such crises. When these crises strike, people panic and suffer great losses, but there are always people who are able to survive them well. There is a simple explanation for these different reactions.

What we prepare ourselves for during the best of times becomes manifested during the worst of times.

Take SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), the first major epidemic in the 20th century, and the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19 Virus) in recent years as examples. They not only bring a lot of inconvenience to our daily life, but also bring spiritual fear to many people. Some people, however, seemed unaffected by the illnesses and their attendant paranoia, and remained confident in their ability to fend off the SARS virus. Where does this confidence come from? Most people are afraid of disease because they are not following proper healthy habits. As long as we have this habit, its virtues will take root in us. A person who has a constant supply of food and water need not worry about hunger and thirst. In the same way, a person who regularly practices Qigong has a large reserve of life energy and can maintain self-confidence and composure in the face of crises.

The first rule of learning qigong is to follow a good exercise and practice everyday.

Stick to one exercise until you have a complete understanding of the what, how, and why of this exercise. Faith and confidence will grow out of persistence, and so will an inexhaustible life force.

Every major epidemic gives rise to a befuddling number of cures. The most effective cures always observe a simple fundamental principle: improving qi and blood circulation to enhance immunity and fortify your body’s own self-defense. Traditional Chinese qigong is a form of preventive medicine. When SARS attacks a person’s body, it causes the lungs to become constricted and slows down the release of used qi, leading to dry coughs, a common early symptom of SARS. An overabundance of stale qi in the lungs increases the body’s internal heat, resulting in a fever. The upper half of the body (above the

diaphragm) keeps burning, while the lower half remains tense and tight. Eventually

internal circulation stagnates, immunity system weakens, and lung capacity decreases.

Reduction of oxygen intake causes one to feel weak and dizzy. SARS is not a very complex disease. As long as we know that the correct treatment must aim to extinguish this internal fire, we are on the right track to recovery.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that all illnesses result from the blocking of qi. The key to long-term health therefore lies in enhancing the free circulation of qi to increase stability and peacefulness of mind.

Pingshuai appears to be an ordinary exercise, but if you learn it well and do it everyday, its effects can be extraordinary. This article offers a step-by-step demonstration of Pingshuai, as well as a detailed explanation of its principles. Please read it carefully and do the exercise with patience. It will produce lifelong health benefits. If you have the opportunity in the future to study more qigong, you will also find Pingshuai has helped you build a solid foundation.

In the process of practicing, please contact me in case you have any question. Do not start teaching others how to do Pingshuai until all your questions are satisfactorily answered. Before then, please feel free to circulate this article so that more people can enjoy its benefits.

Getting to know Pingshuai

Pingshuai is not just one among many different qigong exercises. It is a foundational qigong exercise for the following reasons:

◆   It requires an area only slightly larger than standing space. It is easy to learn and will not result in stray or misdirected qi.

◆   It easily helps you achieve mental and physical stability, and consequently increases your motivation to continue practicing.

◆   It produces quickly visible benefits, including improvement in bodily circulation,

balance, detoxification and replenishment.

◆   Being a simple exercise, it helps you form a habit of daily practice, which is the primary step in learning qigong.

◆   It provides useful aid in overcoming obstacles you may encounter in self-cultivation.

◆   It helps you achieve a dynamic body/mind harmony.

◆   Daily practice of Detoxing Qigong enables you to stay healthy throughout your life.

Pingshuai has its roots in two major systems of qigong. One is Boddhidharma’s qigong regimen, dating back to the 6th century. The other is Master Chang San-Feng’s Taijigong (approx. the 12th century). As its name suggests, Pingshuai stresses the importance of levelness. It allows your qi and blood to travel to the tips of your limbs, expelling stale qi in the process. Because of an intrinsic link between your heart and fingers, qi and blood will then circulate back to your vital organs, opening up the pathways of qi, relaxing your joints, allowing you to become agile and flexible. Daily practice of this simple exercise helps heal many kinds of mental and physical illnesses.

Beginners should do a minimum of three sessions per day, with each session lasting for at least ten minutes (approximately five hundred repetitions). A thirty-minute session gives even better results. At the conclusion of each session, drink a glass of warm water slowly to promote the circulation and storing of qi.

Pingshuai Movements Details

1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes and hells aligned. Breathe normally. Raise both arms to chest height. Keep them parallel to the ground, palms facing downwards.

2. Allow both arms to drop and swing backwards naturally, like a pair of pendulums. Remain relaxed. Keep in mind not to use any force to intentionally push arms backwards. As both arms reach as far back as possible, staying always in a relaxed and

comfortable posture, swing them back in front to the starting chest-height position.

Both arms must remain straight and relaxed, parallel to each other as well as to the ground, hands open, fingers stretched. Each full cycle counts for one repetition.

3. On the fifth repetition, as both arms are falling, slightly bend your knees and dip down

twice. At the completion of the second dip, arms should return to starting position.

Guidelines for Pingshuai

◆   Plant both feet flat on the ground.

◆   Arms, when traveling in front of the body, must always remain straight and parallel   with each other.

◆   Maintain left/right balance.

◆   Never strain to push arms backwards. Allow arms to fall naturally under their own weight.

◆   Maintain a bouncy feeling on the knee-dip. Do not lock your knees. Keep them soft and flexible.

◆   There are no set rules to how much you should bend your knees on the knee-dip. Bend them as far as you feel comfortable, without having to strain to get back up.

◆   Never rush yourself. Always stay relaxed and easy. A fast swinging motion often leads to a tight stance.

◆   Practice for at least thirty minutes every day. Beginners may divide daily exercise into three ten-minute sessions, if sore or numbing sensations should occur.

Health-Giving Effects of Pingshuai

1. Every ten-minute session allows for roughly five hundred repetitions. The first ten

2. minutes activates qi to circulate throughout your entire body. The second ten minutes

allows qi to penetrate into parts of your body that have degenerated form overuse. During the third ten minutes, the healing process begins, and your internal blockages are gently removed.

3. Stay loose and easy while maintaining a firm stance. This exercise increases your

4. stamina and flexibility. The key is to grasp what it feels like to stand firm but remain loose.

5. Do not overbend your knees on the knee-dip as its purpose is to mobilize the knee joints and increase their quickness as well as prevent them from ageing. Bend only as much as the knees still remain supple.

6. The knee-dip is a plunging motion done with a sense of gentle springiness. It settles your qi and allows your heart to remain serene. The repetitive movement also keeps your body from becoming tense. Furthermore, the routine motion enables one to reach a state of quietude in constant motion, thereby achieving mental focus naturally. With extended practice, your mind will gradually enter a profound meditative state.

7. During the exercise, when qi fills up your fingers, it will begin to resonate with and circulate throughout your internal organs, which will gradually recuperate. With patient and consistent practice, many chronic illnesses and illnesses associated with old age can be cured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: There are several different schools of arm swing exercises. How does pingshuai differ

from others?

A: Thers is a kind of arm swing in which the practitioner stretches the neck, extends the head upward, squeezes the thighs together, tightens the buttocks and then pushes the arms backwards with force. This not only increases the risk of hyperextension, but also causes qi to concentrate mainly in the upper body, which in turn causes discomfort in the head. This exercise is not suitable for any people, such as pregnant women, the elderly, children ,people suffering from high blood pressure and anemia, as well as women who are menstruating.

Pingshuai, on the other hand , emphasizes ease over speed. It is a measured exercise that keeps your body loose and your arms swinging naturally. Your body ,though relaxed, is not in a static state. It is moving constantly but the muscles are not tense. Breathing naturally, you can safely do this exercise on your own without any potential hazards.

Q2: How is Pingshuai different from other physical exercises?

A: Exercises designed to burn calories are basically consumptive exercises. More often than not, they make you feel spent, rather than regenerated. Their movements also

exercise only your muscles and bones, not your internal organs. In addition, these exercises require rigorous physical movements, which put your body in a tense, rather

than relaxed, condition. Needless to say, a tense body is prone to sports injuries.

Pingshuai starts from a different set of principles. Because your fingers are linked with your heart, repetitive swings will quickly send qi to the tips of your hands. Once qi reaches your finger tips without impediment, it then easily flows back to massage your internal organs; the knee-dip sinks qi to your feet, and the repeated swings again carry it upwards to enliven your brain. Thus, qi and blood circulate throughout your entire body, and your mind merges with your body to become one.

Q3: Do you recommend the use of self-learning books and videotapes?

A: Books and videotapes are nothing more than learning tools. Their real function is to point the way to the correct concepts and methods, and eventually to a good teacher. A Long-term learning program still requires that the instructor be able to give personal attention to each individual learner, as everyone has his own unique character, physical condition considerable physical reactions in the process of learning qigong. One need a good teacher to help correctly interpret these reactions. Without such a teacher, one runs the risk of causing damage to, rather than benefiting one’s own body. It is with these precautions in mind that we have prepared PDF on Pingshuai. We have chosen the easiest-to-learn movement and written a meticulous introduction to its method of practice, in the hope that you can pick it up easily and become a lifelong learner. Who knows? Maybe someday you will join us and become a member of our Tai chi Family.

Q4: Is there a shortcut to mastering qigong?

A: Starting here and now is the best shortcut.

Q5: How long does it take before one begins to see improvement in health?

A: To learn qigong well, it is important to combine a full understanding of fundamental qigong principles with daily practice. A minimum of ten minutes per day gives visible

results. The primary goal of any physical training is to improve internal circulation. Everything else builds upon this foundation. Therefore, daily exercise, especially done for

half an hour before bedtime and after awakening, produces surprising improvement in health.

Q6: How long should I wait after meals to start practicing?

A: The best result is achieved on an empty stomach. Nevertheless, Pingshuai is such a gentle movement that once you become adept at it, you can practice after a meal.

It even helps with digestion. The rule of thumb is to practice whenever you have free time.

Q7: What should I do if I have difficulties balancing one side of my body with the other?

And why do I sometimes feel warm on one side and cold on the other?

A: Unbalance is a common bodily problem which can nonetheless be overcome through mental control. In other words, you must consciously adjust your strong side to match your weak side. Everybody has a strong side and a weak side. This also explains the temperature differentiation you may experience in various parts of your body. You may feel one side of your body warmer than the other side, or the upper half colder than the lower half, for example. You need not be disturbed by these symptoms. Keep not be disturbed by these symptoms. Keep on practicing and focus your attention on increasing the free circulation of qi. Eventually you will reach a state of natural balance.

Q8: Is there a proper diet for qigong?

A: Eat light and cut back on meat consumption. It is best to adopt a vegetarian diet. Eating animal flesh causes qi to go stale easily, and the efforts you make will be expended more on expelling used qi, and less on building good qi.

Q9: I have heard that stray or misdirected qi may lead to severe mental and physical damages. Is Pingshuai likely to put me in such danger?

A: Even and rhythmic swings enhance the circulation of qi and blood. Once your body

establishes a comfortable rhythm, it reaches a dynamic stability, putting your mind in a naturally focused state. The ultimate form of mental focus is a wonderful state of peacefulness and serenity. Pingshuai is such a gentle exercise that can practice it for a lifetime without the risk of misdirecting your qi.

Q10: What kinds of physical reactions should I expect from Pingshuai?

A: There are five most common physical reactions: 1) soreness, 2) aches and pains, 3)

numbness or pins and needles, 4) itchiness, and 5) congestion. Theses reactions are all natural results of the body’s self-healing mechanism, having been activated by Pingshuai, attempting to expel toxins and diseases from itself.

1)    Soreness. It is common to feel sore in the upper/lower back, neck, joints, arms and/or hands. This often is a result of overwork. Prolonged tension and overwork damage your original qi and weaken your immune system.

2)    Aches & pains. Blockage of qi builds up slowly inside your body. When a certain body part becomes blocked, you will begin to feel aches and pains. This is a warning form your body that something is not right. In an ordinary person’s circulation system, qi tends to work its way around a blocked area, instead of confronting it. This blocked area will eventually grow into an insurmountable cancerous obstacle, unless it is broken up by qi.

A physical blockage can be simultaneously a cause and a result of a mental block. Your mind and body are so intimately connected that they have to be treated as a whole in order for any cure to be complete. However, without the aid of a correct method as well as regular practice, sheer willpower alone can rarely overcome these blockages.

3)    Numbness or pins and needles. There are two kinds of numbing sensations. The first kind is caused by the gradual removal of the blockages in your qi pathways. It feels like an electric current is passing through your body. This, if course, is a good thing. The other kind of numbness is a total lack of sensation in a certain body part. It feels like your qi and blood are passing through a complete void. This feeling of emptiness is very dangerous, because dead blood cells will begin to collect around the impassable area. Over a period of time it will begin to rot and eventually turn into cancer when

4)    infected with bacteria.

5)    Itchiness. When qi begins to reach a previously blocked area, that area will feel itchy. This is not a bug-crawling-over-skin kind of itchiness. This itchiness comes from deep inside your body. Wherever it begins to itch, qi has arrived there.

6)    Congestion. Congestion is caused by an obstructed returning flow of qi. A congested

body results in a congested mind. A happy body creates a happy mind, which in turn

creates a happier body. Your mind and body are mutual indicators of each other’s

condition of health. Very few people can stay happy when their bodies are sick. When you feel depressed, your life energy decreases, and your internal resilience and

immune system are also weakened. Have patience and practice Pingshuai daily. Your returning flow will improve, and so will your health.

Q11: What is it like to reach the highest level of Pingshuai?

A: During exercising, the “six roots” of your being ( namely your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and thoughts ) may experience the following stages:

1.     Focus your mind on your movements. Gradually you will begin to forget about your own existence and your “six roots” will vanish. When this happens, do not panic and do not let your thoughts go astray. Wisdom will emerge out of this empty quietude.

2.     When your concentration on your arms’ pendulum motion, and breathe naturally. You will then slowly understand what it truly means to let go of yourself and reach a higher subtle and refined level.

3.     After you reach the second level, you will then be able to connect with another world and gain the highest level of knowledge. However, this knowledge must not be used recklessly. In this way, you will add wisdom upon wisdom and further improve yourself.

Pingshuai is an exercise for a lifetime. Which level you will reach depends on how far you are willing to take yourself. Some people allow their karma to determine the courses of their lives. Others seek to change their karma and elevate themselves to higher levels.

Pingshua is a method to change your karma.

Making Self-Adjustments

Keep the following self-adjustment principles in mind during exercise.

1. Keep your body balanced, and feet parallel to each other.

2. Breathe easily. Maintain balance between your internal qi and outside form. Follow the natural rhythm of your original life energy.

3. Try to send your qi to the tips of your fingers and allow it to resonate with your

internal organs.

4. Watch your physical reaction, as they are faithful indicators of your health condition.

5. Do not change your pace. Establish a steady rhythm to avoid agitating your qi. An even pace will lead your spirit and mind to a state of perfection.

Through Pingshuai, you will learn to turn your mind inward on yourself and make internal self-adjustments. At the same time, you will also strengthen your resilience and immune systems, thereby raising your self-confidence.

A Total Transformation

An old Chinese proverb says, “ All illnesses are rooted in emotional disturbances. Relieve the emotions to alleviate the illness.” In other words, an illness becomes aggravated if its psychological aspect is left undealt with. A sudden emotional impact often causes your qi to become obstructed, leading to bodily ailments. It is therefore important to work on your self-cultivation. This is why in addition to physical training, you must also keep a clear sense of righteousness, so that your emotions do not rule over yourself.

Maintain peacefulness of mind. A peaceful mind is not subject to emotional extremes and remains calm in the face of challenges. Such a person will in the end realize the true meaning of life.

Do not rely on pills or food alone to maintain your health. A correct qi training that

emphasizes “balance” and “coordination” is the true path to lifelong health. A regular and well-coordinated exercise stabilizes your body, improves your circulation, and increases your resilience. It starts with physical movements, but elevates your mind and ends in a dynamic harmony between mind and body.

When you are moving towards a higher state of self-consciousness, the flaws in your internal self which you are unwilling to face will become evident. This is a real challenge. At moments like this, remember to not be afraid and reject these flaws. Keep on practicing and you will overcome the challenge.

Practice Pingshuai with a sense of devotion. If you treat it like any other physical exercise

or a mere sport, you will never find out what it can truly do for you. Start with a “100-day routine” (daily practice for 100 days without interruption). When you achieve inside/outside balance and bridge your fingers with your heart, you will experience a total transformation of your entire being. After that, learning other qigong exercises or Tai chi will be a much easier task.

I am very lucky because I have had the special opportunity to learn about Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Yoga, Meditation, Food Therapy, Spinal Massage and other health regimens. After years of practice, they really are real and effective. Take myself as an example. During SARS, I had no vaccinations and never got infected; during COVID-19, I traveled between China and Australia and never got infected. In fact, I rarely even catch a cold. Even if I catch a cold occasionally, I don’t need to take medicine and I can recover in a short time; I only need 5-6 hours of sleep every day, I am full of energy and don’t feel tired. Over the years, I have felt calmer, more content, and happier. I think this is due to my daily practice of Tai Chi and Qigong plus my long-term vegetarian diet. These methods have worked for me and will work for you. I am willing to share with more people who love life and pursue spiritual growth.

…The swinging hands routine is going really well. Russ is the timekeeper and I believe we are past 75% of the way. There’s no way I’ll stop at all. Actually in reading your pdf again last night I am now also doing half hr. at night before bed. I’ll write down a few notes as I go from here just about any major or minor sensation. I’ve noticed so far the my regular gout attacks have declined in frequency. My sleep is sounder. And there’s a new level of less fatigue thru the day. And a few extra smile. All good things of course.

…Wonderful. Thanks! I dive out of bed every day for it. With a smile of course. It’s a great ritual to be part of it and I’m truly grateful to all for this Pingshuai experience.

…I had a major heart operation in Jan ’23 It very much knocked me around. Today I went to the cardiologist for an annual checkup. He said ‘what are you doing here? Your condition is perfect. Come back if you ever need me’

Prusha I put it all down to ‘waving flags.’ Russel and I hit 200 days on Thursday. I put my health down to this commitment. So thank you again for this introduction and for this commitment to health and well being.

More miracles are happening

May all beings live in peace with a smile

keep smiling

Prusha
